Swingers in Massachusetts

The Boston area's lifestyle scene is quieter and more residential than you might expect from a big city. Its two oldest venues are small, private and run by people who screen every guest by phone.

The Sterling, near the Newton and Needham line, describes itself as New England's second-oldest swing club. It is a lounge-scale club with no dance floor or private rooms, open most Saturday evenings for members who pass an interview, and it is BYOB. Out in Grafton, near Worcester, DB Socials has hosted small couples parties in a private home since 1999. Guests bring drinks and food to share, and evenings run from 7 to 11, which suits couples who would rather be home by midnight.

For a bigger night, Club SINZ takes the upper floors of a building on North End Boulevard in Salisbury, near the New Hampshire line, on alternate Saturdays with a licensed bar and a large dance floor. In western Massachusetts, Club4Play books hotel floors and ballrooms around Chicopee and West Springfield for couples and single women, with Latin music and a late-night meal around 1 a.m. Mindbender Parties, a traveling New England series, also passes through.

Club E'Lan in Wakefield, a private-home club founded in 1994, is no longer operating.
